Jiangsu college breeds campus innovation

(ec.js.edu.cn) Updated:2017-01-25

Innovation is the soul of Nanjing Institute of Technology (NJIT), as the school is always striving to build a more creative campus atmosphere.

At a recently closed exhibition for innovative achievements, students from NJIT amazed the public with a large variety of essays, patents and creative products.

A coin sorting machine was the most eye-catching creation at the exhibition. According to Tao Hong, a student at NJIT and member of the inventing group, the machine was inspired by common cash counting machines, while accommodating the fact that coins are preferred in southern China for small change.

Thanks to NJIT’s practical courses, students have healthy access to related professional knowledge and practical cases which allowed the inventing group to engineer the machine after half a year’s development.

“The machine can sort out more than 3,000 coins of differing amounts in a minute,” said Tao Hong proudly.

The machine also took first prize at a national mechanical design competition for college students held in Shandong province last July.

The fruits of innovation on display at the exhibition are just a tip of the iceberg. To assist students in learning more practical skills and improving their competitiveness, NJIT has set up 43 courses targeted at innovation, and 100 specialized massive open online courses (MOOCs). More than 220 experts of different technological fields have also been invited as guest lectures to give students instruction.
