Jiangsu Polytechnic College of Agriculture and Forestry is improving the quality of its curriculum by sending its teachers back into their specialist industries to learn about the latest developments firsthand.

As a result, the college expects its teachers to gain an up-to-date and complete understanding of what skills are needed by their students before sending them out into the workplace.

Sun Zhiyuan, an agricultural lecturer at the college, was recently sent to France to study the latest techniques in breeding pigs without the use of antibiotics. On his return, Sun was able to pass on the industry knowledge he learned directly to his students.

“After taking part in the practical work, I gained a better understanding of the process of raising pigs,” Sun said. “It means I am now able to address more practical, real life issues which are sometimes not addressed in the textbooks.”

Wang Quanzhi, a teacher of agronomics recently spent time at an industrial greenhouse dedicated to the cultivation of strawberries.

“The new teaching model allows teaches to combine their experiences with the theory in the textbooks and create a better and more rounded learning environment for the students,” said Yu Weidong, the college secretary.
