A group of 23 faculty members from China Pharmaceutical University attended a training program from July 5 to 9 to enhance their English proficiency and immersive teaching skills such as their ability to motivate and engage students in classroom activities.
During the first four days the teachers received lectures by Peter Saunders, who has been working for the last 12 years at the language support unit of the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University in the UK.
Through various presentations the teachers spent their last day putting what they had learned, such as the micro-teaching skills, into practice.
“Faculty members know their subject areas well and are great teachers in the classroom, but they need to learn the skills to effectively teach their courses in English,” Saunders said.
Huang Yiwei, who delivers courses in English on mathematics and computer science, said the lectures given by Saunders were inspiring and encouraging.
“I used to think that diversified teaching methods are unnecessary in university classrooms, but now I realize that students can learn better in a free and open atmosphere than by just sitting in a formal lecture setting,” he said.
