With the arrival of Cold Dew, the 17th solar term of the year, on Oct 8, a teacher from Rugao Foreign Language School in Jiangsu province taught her students about the natural phenomenon and local traditions surrounding the annual event.

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Cold Dew (Chinese: 寒露) ends on Oct 23 this year.

According to the teacher, during Cold Dew, temperatures drop markedly, rain subsides, and fog increases in most areas of China.

Cold Dew marks the arrival of the autumn harvest season and is a time for fishing, kipper-making, and enjoying pomegranate, chrysanthemum wine, hawthorns and chestnuts.
