The eighth innovation and entrepreneurship competition for college students kicked off in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu province on June 24. 1,348 works designed by students from over 300 universities from at home and abroad attended the competition.
Many creative works, most of which were taken inspirations from daily lives, gained much attention and appreciation at the event.
The nutrient gel developed by Zhu Jiawei from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, a new plants cultivation technique, was one example.
"I like flowers and plants, but I cannot always keep them well, either the water is too much or the leaves are full of insects," Zhu said.
Working out a simple and tidy way to cultivate plants is a dream of Zhu and his studies at the university has helped him speed up the progress.
His nutrient gel frees people from fertilizing and can nourish plants for over a year. People only need to keep the gel moist and offers abundant indoor light to their plants. After coming into the market at the second half of last year, the gel has generated sales revenue of over 520,000 yuan ($74,308). Zhu was also crowned the "master of invention" at the competition.
Traveling is a hobby of Zhang Yuxin, a postgraduate from Nanjing Agricultural University. He has been working on integrating regional cultural elements with ancient imperial craft techniques. Over 200 of his creative cultural products have been sold at more than 400 shops in scenic spots, museums and transportation hubs across the country.
